Abstract:
A base for a group of permutations of a set \(\Omega\) is a subset of
\(\Omega\) whose pointwise stabiliser contains only the identity permutation.
Useful for computational applications,
determining the minimum possible size of a base --- called the base size --- of a group
has been the subject of a large amount of research over the past forty years.
In this talk we will discuss results pertaining to the base size of the symmetric group \(S_n\),
and describe recent work which completely determines the base size of all primitive actions of \(S_n\).
